What is meal and how is it used

Meal (from German Schrot, meaning small pieces or scraps), is a concentrated feed, is a by-product of oil extraction production. It is obtained after extraction of fat from oilseeds with organic solvents.

Depending on the raw materials used, soy, rapeseed, mustard, cotton, castor oil, hemp and other types of meal are distinguished. Meal is a valuable high-protein feed. For example, sunflower meal contains about 38% of well-digestible protein. Meal contains vitamins of groups E and B, very rich in phosphorus.

All types of meal are very good for use in compound feed. In particular, sunflower, flaxseed and soybean meal are often included in compound feeds for farm animals of all kinds; hempseed mainly for feeding cattle, adult sheep and pond fish; coriander and castor oil are usually used in limited quantities, because of the content of ricin in them, it is mainly used for feeding cattle; and, finally, cotton, it is also used in small quantities, due to the content of state oil in the meal, and mainly goes to feed pigs and dairy cows.
